Zappafan.net is an unofficial online community dedicated to the music of Frank Zappa, created and operated by fans. This site is intended for educational and noncommercial purposes, to provide a place for musicians and Zappa tribute bands to submit their original music / music covers for reviews, and allows anyone from anywhere on the globe to collaborate on musical projects.

MP3/MIDI files that are used on this site are believed to be artists' renditions of said songs and not original compositions, except where noted. All renditions are entirely a matter of the creator's interpretation. As a result, while some renditions remain faithful to the original songs, others take a whole new turn and end up in completely different places - some are pretty good, some are really awful. For that very reason, all of the visitors to this site are strongly encouraged to listen to the original songs first.

I am not a lawyer, so I guess what we are doing is not criminal. I do not think this site could cause any direct, indirect or consequential damages or any kind of intellectual, pecuniary or non-pecuniary loss to anyone. We do not intend to infringe copyrights, trademarks or other intellectual property rights of anyone. But we demand the artistic FREEDOM, the rights to create different renditions of anyone's music, learn and play anyone's music we want to and submit them free to this site, within „FAIR USE". I'd like to encourage people to learn, play and listen to Zappa's music, I want Frank Zappa and his music to be alive - because I'm convinced that music only dies when people leave it behind and nobody wants to play it anymore.

Hopefully copyright holders can tolerate this stuff - maybe they recognize that we are not enemies, maybe they realize we have a common interest somewhere and see this site as some kind of free promotion.

Upgrading

Finally, I found some time to rebuild the Upload-system too. It seems to work well, so check it out and upload your music! Now you can enter a comment for your song, and/or about you (or your band). Your song files must be mp3 files encoded at 128-192kbps/44khz/max.15MB.

I have installed and finished setting up a new Photo Gallery. All the registered users can upload pics to their own personal gallery.

Why this website and why do I this?
Reallly good question! The simple answer is: I wanted to.

Ok, here goes the long version: I'm a 19 years old guy from Budapest, Hungary. I study music, computer science & electronics to be a sound / music engineer. So, this page is my playground where I can try out my web programming (html, css, ms sql, asp) and music recording / editing skills.

Now I do not think of myself as a musician, and I do not make my living as a musician. But I am convinced that analysing and playing Zappa's music helps to train myself to be a musician. Anyway I think, playing Zappa is a great challenge - and it has become one of my favourite hobbies!

As you can see, this website is not and was never intended to be a competitor to Google or Myspace. It is what it appears to be. It gives the possibility to publish your own Zappa covers and/or your own music here. That's all.

Who is Frank Zappa?
The one behind that funny moustache. And he's the guy who has his picture taken sitting on the toilet.

Anyway, he is the best guitarist, the most intelligent and most talented musician to ever walk the Earth. Frank Zappa is the grand wazoo. For more information, click here.

What is MIDI?
MIDI (short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a music industry standard communications protocol that lets MIDI compatible instruments (keyboards, drums, guitars, etc.) and sequencers (or computers running sequencer software) talk to each other to play and record music. More and more of the music you hear every day is written with and played by MIDI sequencers.
